'We have never seen anything like this in the 24 years we have studied the supermassive black hole,' researcher Andrea Ghez said.

The supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy seems to be getting hungrier and scientists aren't sure why.a team of researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles examined more than 13,000 observations of the supermassive black hole—known as Sagittarius A*—dating back to 2003.

"We have never seen anything like this in the 24 years we have studied the supermassive black hole," Andrea Ghez, co-senior author of the study from UCLA, said in a statement."It's usually a pretty quiet, wimpy black hole on a diet. We don't know what is driving this big feast." At present, it is not clear whether the latest observations indicate a one-off event or the beginning of a period of increased activity for the black hole.
