A study from the Department of Defense found that military air and ground crew have an increased rate of cancer when compared to the general population, but they were not more likely to die from cancer.

Data on cancer rates and deaths in these two groups were compared with similar age groups in the general population through use of the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Database of the National Cancer Institute. For ground crew members, the analysis found a 19% higher rate of cancers of the brain and nervous system, a 15% higher rate of thyroid cancer, 9% higher rate of both melanoma and of kidney and renal pelvis cancers, and a 3% higher rate of cancer for all sites combined.
“Results may have differed if additional, older former service members had been included in the study, since cancer risk and mortality rates increase with age,” the authors commented.
