Florida state Rep. Mike Hill joked about killing gay people. Then he clashed with Republican leaders.
TALLAHASSEE — Rep. Mike Hill exchanged testy text messages with legislative leaders of his own party after the Pensacola Republican joked at a political event about killing gay people, records show.
After the recording was made public, Hill faced near-universal backlash, drawing condemnation in a joint statement from fellow Republicans House Speaker Jose Oliva and Rep. Chris Sprowls, who is in line to be the next House speaker. “You should have called me before you joined the mob,” Hill texted Oliva and Sprowls on June 1, the day they issued the joint statement.“Good morning Rep. Hill. I am a GOP activist who also happens to be gay. I listened to the audio and feel you are being railroaded into an apology or resignation,” read the message from the unidentified sender. “Please DO NOT do neither!”“You need to be more concerned with your own action before you advise me on mine,” Oliva told Hill in a text message.
