Asylum seekers are being removed from the Bibby Stockholm barge after Legionella bacteria was found in the water supply, according to reports

Asylum seekers are being removed from the Bibby Stockholm barge after dangerous Legionella bacteria was found in the water supply, the Home Office has confirmed.

“Having created a serious and now deadly migrant housing crisis it is obvious to all that the Home Secretary about has lost all control and authority on the issue of illegal migration. She is responsible for this crisis and should be held to account for her irresponsible actions that has brought disease to these sites and now threaten the public health of the local community.”

A Home Office spokesperson confirmed that “environmental samples from the water system on the Bibby Stockholm have shown levels of legionella bacteria which require further investigation”.“As a precautionary measure, all 39 asylum seekers who arrived on the vessel this week are being disembarked while further assessments are undertaken,” the spokesperson said.

Dorset Council said: “Dorset Council’s Environmental Health team and Public Health Dorset are advising the Home Office and its contractors, alongside the UK Health Security Agency and NHS Dorset, following notification of positive samples of legionella bacteria in the water system on the Bibby Stockholm barge.

However, Suella Braverman and her ministerial colleagues are hellbent on confining vulnerable people in ‘jail like conditions’ on what is effectively a prison ship. This outbreak of Legionella suggests that it’s only a matter of time before either lives are lost or there is serious harm to a detainee.”

The Refugee Council said it was “deeply concerned” by news of the Legionella, saying: “We have a responsibility to give people seeking asylum safe and secure accommodation while they are in the UK asylum system. But instead of providing people who have come to our country in search of safety with suitable places to live, the Government is placing them in accommodation that is entirely unsuitable to their needs.

“Accommodation providers should be aware that in the event of a significant outbreak, large numbers of staff as well as residents may be impacted. Contingency plans for surge staffing to maintain minimum numbers should be in place,” the document, released under Freedom of Information laws to NHS Dorset and shared withAn asylum seeker who has refused to travel to the Bibby Stockholm after being notified by the Home Office he must board has spoken of his fears for a friend who is already onboard.
