The sheriff’s office and the Midwest Veterans Closet are collaborating on their fifth-annual coat drive through Dec. 4 at seven locations around Lake County to help keep service members, veterans and their families warm this winter.
Veterans and active duty members of the U.S. Armed Forces can pick food, clothing and other items from the shelves or racks for free at the Midwest Veterans Closet in North Chicago . Unlike other organizations which distribute food and clothing, the veterans closet requires no proof of need to qualify. Founder Mary Carmody only asks one thing — a military or veterans identification card.
“I can help take care of people the way people took care of me.” Barber, who was looking for a coat for himself and his wife, served in the Army from 2007 to 2010. Life has not been easy for him since he left the service, as he said he has been homeless some of the time. He starts a new job next week. “It really helps with food and clothing,” Barber said of the veterans closet. “It really helps when you’re looking for a new job.
