Microsoft has adopted Kata Containers to bring workload isolation to Azure Kubernetes Service. Based on the Hyper-V, Microsoft’s own hypervisor, and CBL-Mariner Linux, a home-grown Linux distribution, Microsoft is able to optimize the performance of running Kata Containers in AKS.
Managing the Hyper-V VMs is another open source project, Cloud Hypervisor, a lightweight container management tool collaboratively built by companies such as Alibaba, AMD, ARM, ByteDance, Intel and Microsoft.CBL-Mariner
, which is made with a simple, cloud-focused view. Fancy packages such as Window managers and other graphical programs are removed, making the system less vulnerable to attacks. It also makes the system smaller, helping customers to keep up with the updates. Developers and DevOps engineers targeting Kata Containers in the AKS environment must annotate their workload definition, hinting at the runtime to provision the VM instead of directly running the containers on the host.
Microsoft is not the only cloud provider offering the ability to run containerized workloads in dedicated VMs. Google has been supporting this feature through an open source sandbox technology called. It brings the same level of isolation as Kata Containers through the interception and blocking of the system calls without actually running separate VMs.
Though Amazon has invested in Firecracker - a lightweight, container-optimized operating system - it has yet to seamlessly integrate it with Elastic Kubernetes Service to launch isolated pods.
