Tucker was suspended on Sept. 10 amid allegations of sexual harassment.
Michigan State head coach Mel Tucker looks to the scoreboard as he paces on the sideline during the second half on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2021 in East Lansing. Michigan State defeated Michigan 37-33. Following a tumultuous 17-day ordeal involving allegations of sexual harassment, the university formally fired the fourth-year coach for cause on Wednesday.
“Simply put, Mr. Tucker’s response does not provide any information that refutes or undermines the multiple grounds for termination for cause set forth in the notice,” Haller said in a press release on Wednesday. “Instead, his 25-page response, which includes a 12-page letter from his attorney and a 13-page ‘expert report,’ provides a litany of excuses for his inappropriate behavior while expressly admitting to the problematic conduct outlined in the notice.
“It is highly inappropriate and improper to engage in extramarital sexual conduct with a vendor,” Haller wrote in the letter to Tucker, “let alone an honorary captain of the football team, whose mission is to educate coaches and student-athletes, and specifically the university’s football student-athletes under your direction, on sexual misconduct.”
With Tucker officially fired, a special 30-day window for Michigan State players to enter the transfer portal will kick in starting Thursday. Eligibility situations vary player-to-player and not all will be able to enter the portal and be immediately eligible to play at their next school.Dantonio, the winningest coach in program history, abruptly retired in February 2020 and Michigan State hired Tucker, who was coming off his first season as a head coach and posted a 5-7 record at Colorado.
Tucker overhauled the roster through the portal and hit the jackpot by landing Wake Forest backup running back Kenneth Walker III. He turned in one of the greatest individual seasons in program history by rushing for 1,636 yards and 18 touchdowns and leading Michigan State to an 11-win season and top-10 ranking in the final polls in 2021. Walker became the first Spartan named Walter Camp Player of the Year and to win the Doak Walker Award, which is given to the nation’s top running back.
