To combat significant decline in students completing teacher programs in Michigan, districts are starting offering incentives and starting grow your own programs.
With eight alums ready to join Ann Arbor Public Schools’ teaching staff this fall, Superintendent Jeanice Swift said programs like its Pioneer High School Trailblazer mentoring class have been innovative in attracting current students to become teachers by offering a glimpse of what it’s like. It also demonstrates the value of working in the district they grew up in, she said.
Packard credits Trailblazers, started by her father, Don, for preparing her for teaching in what has always been her dream teaching destination. Career and technical education teachers and secondary science teachers are the district’s most in-demand positions, she said, but candidates are difficult to attract in the Upper Peninsula.
At Grosse Ile Township Schools in Wayne County, Superintendent Valerie Orr said there are two unfilled positions heading into the year, with the district struggling to fill openings in areas like special education.
