Greg Holcomb still remembers the moment he realized J.J. McCarthy was special.

McCarthy promptly ripped an 18-yard pass on a comeback route — the type of throw no one else in attendance could make. If McCarthy's ranking holds, he would be the top-rated quarterback signed by Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh and the highest-ranked quarterback to come from the Midwest based on the 247Sports Composite rankings, which stretch back to 2000.
“He was always a natural thrower," Holcomb said. "And he was pretty accurate. He’s got an uncanny ability to put balls into small windows even when he’s not in the ideal situation. I think that’s just a natural trait that he is, I think it’s just one of those things that puts him in a position to be so highly ranked."
And then there's the natural arm talent, accuracy and mobility, which is why Holcomb sees the comparisons between McCarthy and Michigan's starting quarterback, Shea Patterson.
