We speak with Nanny star Michelle Monaghan (realmonaghan) about working with Nikyatu Jusu, confronting the intersection of womanhood and motherhood, and the complexity of her character. The brilliant horror film is now available to stream on PrimeVideo:

Nanny marks Nikyatu Jusu’s feature directorial debut, and the film has made quite a splash since debuting at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. Since then, the drama has been picked up by Prime Video, where it is now streaming, and, with an all-star cast and a multi-dimensional story, has received high praise from critics and awards consideration.

She had such a critical voice and truly one that evokes such a fresh point of view that I think we've rarely seen before on film. And she's so well versed in just all areas of the craft, but just culture and her passion for film, it's contagious. I'd never met a filmmaker like her, frankly, and was just so excited to get to collaborate with her.

Michelle Monaghan: Yeah, I mean, I think initially Amy sets out to really try to ingratiate herself and really presents her best self to Aisha. And as the story develops, we just see a woman who's riddled with her own biases and who's really struggling a lot herself. And my goal in developing the role was, and in performance, was really trying to humanize the character.

We all were there for the right reasons and we really all trusted in her and, in turn, trusted each other. And she created a really great environment, a great atmosphere. We had, not a lot of rehearsal time, but poignant rehearsal time and really impactful rehearsal time, so that when a lot of those uncomfortable scenes did come up, specifically between Anna's character and myself, Amy and Aisha, a lot of those were very nuanced.

And that made me stop in my tracks. It was something that I hadn't really considered. And from my position as a white woman, it was something that I had never had to consider. And so that was really important to me and not acknowledging maybe how we limit or benefit from that service specifically, and to the unspoken privileges that we all kind of perpetuate from.
