WhenTheySeeUs: “This was different from any other thing I’ve ever done because of my relationship with the story,' said Williams

When They See Us,’s chronicle of the case and its aftermath—was there. He was in his early 20s at the time, a born and bred New Yorker from East Flatbush, Brooklyn.

Now Williams can see himself in DuVernay’s series, in which he plays Bobby McCray, father of Antron—who tragically convinced his son to sign the false confession he’d made to the police.; such is the material. But the story of the McCray family is uniquely tough, in part because, unlike the other boys’ parents, Bobby McCray left his family when his son, merely a boy, was sent to prison.

The conversation seemed to spark something in him, however. “It made me realize how important it was for me to take this journey with her and the rest of this cast, because it truly was a journey,” said Williams. “And I said to myself that if she gave me this opportunity, I was going to use every tool in my box. I was going to make every ounce of my being available to every human living thing on that set; I don’t give a shit if it was a fly, I’m going to relate to it.

This inner torment comes through in the texture of the performance itself. The scene of Antron’s interrogation is rife with fear and anger—even more so when, after a brief but miscalculated conversation with a police officer, Bobby heads back into the interrogation room to bully his son into signing the confession.

Key to understanding all of this is Antron himself, with whom Williams spoke briefly before filming. Antron is notably quiet; unlike the other four men in the case, he does not appear onscreen indocumentary, released in 2012. Williams understands why. “This severely altered Antron’s life,” he said. “There’s no amount of money you can give him. Both of his parents are deceased. One died with him—I mean, you can’t give back what was taken from him.

“This was different from any other thing I’ve ever done because of my relationship with the story, and how dark and dense it is,” he said. “I haven’t had another job in my career that hit me at this level. I remember so much of where I was at of 1989. I had forgotten—I had changed the way I dressed from fear of not wanting the police to think that I was one ofFrightened! I’d forgotten about that until I got on the set and started to explore my own relationship to the trauma.
