Michael Jackson's name will remain on L.A. school building, despite sexual misconduct allegations, after vote by parents & staff

The auditorium of a Los Angeles elementary school will continue to be named for Michael Jackson, despite recent sexual misconduct claims levied against the late pop star.

But after a recent HBO documentary, Leaving Neverland, unearthed new allegations against Jackson a decade after the singer and songwriter died from an accidental drug overdose, some parents wanted his name removed from the building. The documentary, which first aired in March, featured dancer/choreographer Wade Robson and former child actor James Safechuck, two men who — as children — worked closely with Jackson and who now say they were sexually abused by the Thriller singer.

“A majority of those who participated voted to maintain the current name as the Michael Jackson Auditorium,” the Los Angeles Unified School District said in a statement. “School leaders, teachers and support staff will focus on preventing any further disruptions to the school and further impact to classroom instruction, student learning and safety.”

“We lived in Hollywood close to Gardner Street School, which is why I went there,” Robson said. “This was right after Michael Jackson sponsored me to the U.S. and while he was still sexually abusing me.”
