Meta was fined a record 1.2 billion Euros ($1.3 billion) over the transfer of data collected from users in the European Union to the U.S.
Meta Was Just Fined a Record-Breaking $1.3 Billion by E.U. Regulators
The fine, announced by Ireland’s Data Protection Commission , is the biggest penalty since the E.U. implemented the General Data Protection Regulation the company is accused of infringing. The amount far surpassed Amazon’s 746 million Euro fine in 2021 for data protection violation. The DPC originally disagreed with other E.U. regulators over Meta’s fine, which resulted in the European Data Protection Board stepping in to impose it.
“The ability for data to be transferred across borders is fundamental to how the global open internet works,” Nick Clegg, Meta president of global affairs, and Jennifer Newstead, chief legal officer at the company, said in aon Monday.
