BREAKING: Met Office issues 24-hour snow warning for Lancashire as up to 10cm could fall
Met Office forecasters have issued a snow warning for large areas of Lancashire and say up to 10cm of the white stuff could fall in some places.
The 24-hour yellow weather snow and ice warning comes into effect from 12pm today . It runs until the same time tomorrow and covers Blackpool, Preston, Fleetwood, Leyland, Kirkham, Ormskirk, West Lancs and Thornton-Cleveleys. They expect a 'couple of centimetres' of snow at low levels, which could rise to 10cm at higher levels. The snow showers, combined with icy stretches, could cause traffic chaos.The Met Office warns that, as a result of the wintry weather conditions, some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services. There may also be injuries caused by slips and falls on icy surfaces.
There will also probably be some icy patches on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths. It comes as a seperate yellow weather warning for ice is expected to end at 10am today. A Met Office spokesperson said: "Snow showers will become more frequent through Monday, continuing to feed in on northwesterly winds overnight. Accumulations of a couple of centimetres are possible at low levels, with higher ground expected to see 5-10 cm in places. In addition, icy stretches are likely to form following showers."
