Sophia Ramos scores 15 for Aztecs, who will face No. 21 UNLV on Tuesday for a shot in the Mountain West championship game
The San Diego State women’s basketball team just couldn’t seem to get over the hump in Monday’s Mountain West Tournament quarterfinal against fourth-seeded New Mexico at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.SDSU’s Mercedes Staples hit a 3-pointer with 1:29 to play to cut the Lobos’ lead to one point, Asia Avinger put the Aztecs in the lead with 47 seconds remaining, and SDSU held on for a 69-68 victory.
The fifth-seeded Aztecs women take on top-seeded and 21st-ranked UNLV today at 5 p.m. in the semifinals. “What a great basketball game,” Aztecs head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson said. “We were prepared to run with New Mexico, and it just came down to getting that last defensive stop. We have a great team, and the chemistry is unreal. They love each other and they play for each other.”
The Aztecs were led by Sophia Ramos, who had 15 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. Yummy Morris and Avinger each finished with 12 while Morris had a game-high nine rebounds. Kim Villalobos, Staples and Abby Prohaska each had 10.Up next
