Mercedes has been caught testing its new CLE coupe, replacement for both the C- and E-Class coupes, and destined to be topped with a CLE63 S AMG variant.
that was launched last year, riding on a rear-wheel drive platform. Alongside its new moniker, it’ll feature a completely bespoke design that doesn’t share any elements with either C or E models, as is clear from this prototype’s bespoke headlights and sloping rear end.
Powertrain options will mimic the C-class, too, so it’ll only be available with four-cylinder engines with varying levels of hybridisation. As is the case with the C-class, the lack of six- or eight-cylinder options is down to two main reasons. First, AMG wants to highlight its E Performance hybrid tech, and when combined with the M197 V8 this would bring the level of performance, cost and complexity over and above the CLE’s market positioning.
