Men's fashion week is cancelled, but the show will go on for Matthew Williams and Alyx.
. He launched the label as a menswear brand in 2015, and has expanded to show both menswear and womenswear during men’s Fashion Week in Paris. Currently, Williams is self-isolating in Montauk, New York, away from his home in Ferrara, Italy, and his factories throughout Italy. Here he shares how Alyx, one of fashion’s most buzzed-about brands, will be making do and striding boldly into the future.
Right now there are no plans to go home [to Ferrara, Italy] in the near future. I came to New York a month ago; it was during my daughters’ spring break from school. The cases are still growing in Italy and in around Milan, where we live. I don’t believe any non-Italian citizens are able to go back now, but even if we were, I don’t think we should travel at this moment.
At Alyx, we have employees who decided to go home to Germany, London, Paris, Milan, or different cities within Italy. All of us are doing group FaceTime sessions and calls. Luckily, the first half of the spring 2021 collection was developed in the usual way. We had designed most of the collection prior to the shutdown of everything, so fingers crossed that when things open up, we will still be good to go.
We briefed the collection with the suppliers, too, but not all of them have begun the prototypes. We design in 3D a lot, so we see what works as a prototype, and then we change a lot of things on the body when we have the physical garment in our hands. A lot of design elements are decided on and developed in the next stage of the process that we still haven’t gotten to because the factories are closed. Going forward, we’ll see if and when we receive prototypes, and what we will keep and change.
We have already decided to reduce the collection size for spring 2021, but we won’t really know exactly what will be reduced until we get closer to June and we see which of our suppliers are going to be able to deliver samples. Right now everything is shut down in Italy. I don’t think anybody can give a long-term plan right now, so we’re taking it day by day.
