Memorial Hermann wins American Hospital Association award for programs improving health care access
Dr. Barry Gritz, a wellness instructor for Memorial Hermann Community Outreach, leads a Zumba class as part of the “Dancing With a Doc” program at Houston’s Clark Park in 2022. The program is one of Memorial Hermann’s initiatives that earned it national recognition from the American Hospital Association for efforts to improve health care equity and access.
“For our organization, this is what we feel we’re supposed to do here in Houston,” he said. “It’s rewarding because of the nature of the work and the fact that we can see impact over the course of time.”, based in Arlington, won the prize last year.Rick Pollack, the president and CEO of the AHA, credited Memorial Hermann for working with community partners to improve Greater Houston residents’ health and well-being.
Access to nutritious foods, safe and secure housing, transportation, education and socioeconomic status all play a role in someone’s overall health, Callender said.
