A particularly defining moment for Gates in her own push for equality came when she asked to contribute more to the annual Gates Foundation letter. Her husband Bill had authored the letter for several years. But as Melinda Gates became more public in her already very active role at the foundation and less constrained by childcare commitments, she felt that “I should step in and write more.” Her goal to co-author the annual letter was met with initial resistance, however.
“I've learned we need to look at all those places of perfectionism and just break them down. They are so not true. Nobody's perfect, nor should we try to be. It takes too much energy.”“Surround yourself with other people who know you and know your true self and can remind you of that best self. You're going to be okay being who you are, not this label that somebody else wants to put on you or a message you're getting from society.
