Melanoma death rates have tripled over the past 40 years, and much more so in men than in women, according to data released by Cancer Research UK today.
After adjusting for differences in age, men were calculated to be 69% more likely to die from the most serious form of skin cancer than women. Adding further emphasis to the difference between the sexes, melanoma mortality has decreased 9% for women in the last decade, but remains unchanged for men. Late stage diagnoses in men – which explain the higher mortality – might be due to the greater likelihood of a torso-located melanoma, often due to men removing their shirts in hot weather, said Cancer Research UK. At these sites, changes to the skin might be harder to spot and go unchecked until too late.. A national emergency was declared earlier today after a red extreme heat warning was issued for the first time.
