Here’s an inside look into the hectic life of Senate pages:
to be around age 12, and they had usually been orphaned or had widowed mothers and were working to help their families.
Each page is sponsored by a senator. While some pages have close relationships with their senators, others barely get to know theirs at all. But living in close quarters with so many other teens can make that a challenge. “They are small, echoey rooms, so if your roommate is up doing work or cleaning, then you’re up too,” Anderson says. “I had to get noise-canceling headphones to make sure I got six hours of sleep.”Beyond the intense schedule, pages are held to high standards by five proctors who supervise them in the dorm at all times.
When the pages are at work, there's a whole other set of rules for decorum. For example, pages aren’t really supposed to speak to a senator unless spoken to first. Despite this, pages say, they form bonds with the senators who do make an effort to speak to them.got to speak to? Booker. They say the New Jersey official went out of his way to make them feel welcome by engaging them, joking around with them, and giving them M&Ms.
But the actual work is a different story: The pages are divided based on whether their sponsoring senator is a Democrat or Republican. They sit on opposite sides of the rostrum and report to different supervisors in the Republican and Democratic cloakrooms. Wong says she felt buoyed by her connection with Hawaii senator Mazie Hirono , who, in 2013, made history by. “Every time she would come open up the Senate on Monday mornings, she would come speak with me,” recalls Wong. “This program used to be pretty white-dominated. Now that we have people of color in this program, and have that representation in the Senate, she really wanted me to feel welcome and to have someone to speak to about these things.
Booker echoes this point: “I also don't want it to be the province of just the connected,” he says. “I’ve called for processes and to select from as broad and as varied a space as possible.”
