We spoke to Elena Velez about her inspirations, the state of the fashion industry and how she plans to make an impact with her platform:
I think the most exciting thing about being a young designer today is the fact that socially, politically, globally, there is a serious need for human connection and industrial correction. Through technology and social climate we have the tools and the platforms now to make serious strides in both of those directions. I think fashion is an ultra powerful tool due to it’s stealth ability to bring about those changes.
Fashion for me is less of a means to speak up nor to cope but a space to process and re-articulate the world around and within.At the moment I’m entirely a one man show. I work really closely with my partner Derek Everson who is a metalsmith artisan in Milwaukee and fly back and forth to work with him in the metal shop however the fashion component is operated entirely by myself.
