She's making her Broadway debut
She wasn’t wrong. After just about three weeks of rehearsals, she was thrust into her Broadway debut on June 7, playing the seminal, complicated, mean high school girl Regina — a mere year after graduating high school herself in North Carolina. Meanwhile, the rest of the teenage portion of the cast is; Renée actually took over the part from Tony-nominated actress Taylor Louderman, who is almost a decade older.
“Watching the movie growing up, I thought Rachel McAdams as Regina was a boss. She takes control of the room and she’s very, very smart,” Renée tells. “There are more layers that you get to go through in the musical than the movie. I wanted her intelligence to be something that was really glorified. There’s a lot to her. And [if I’m playing her] the whole time as this cruel human being, nobody's going to want her to come back from being hit by a bus.
for Best Performance by an Actress, an award for national high school theatre that likely helped put her on the Broadway audition circuit.But though she experienced a lot of success in high school, there was no shortage of drama. Now, she’s able to look upon the characters in“There’s so much drama on stage that it definitely feels like I'm just back in high school,” she says.
