He wasn’t far off. Ahmed was 16 when he made his Leicestershire bow against Yorkshire in the Royal London One Day Cup at Grace Road back in July 2021. By the time his Under-19 World Cup dream had been ended by India the following February, Ahmed was well and truly on England’s radar. “We had a conversation with England at the end of the season about the next few months,” he says. “Everybody wants him, whether it’s Australia T20s to the Pakistan Super League to the T10s. He’s still a young lad who has just finished his exams. We wanted to do the right thing for him because he still has to get fitter and stronger so he’s more robust to do the basics for long periods of time.“It was great how we both sat down for his holistic development.
