Meet one of the coolest frontwomen in rock these days 🎸
Tina Halladay’s vocals can be brass-knuckles or like sugar. She’s the fuse that denotates Sheer Mag, a Philadelphia band whose alloy of arena hooks and punk/metal grit has made them one of rock’s most exciting new bands from the last 10 years. Sheer Mag’s founding members - Halladay, lead guitarist Hart Seely, bassist Kyle Seely and rhythm guitarist Matt Palmer – met while they were students at New York’s Purchase College. They’d previously been in separate bands there.
Sheer Mag’s debut album “Need to Feel Your Love” was one of 2017′s standout LPs. In addition to bruisers like “Meet Me in the Street” and “Rank and File,” it’s stuffed with catchy rockers like the title track, “Just Can’t Get Enough” and “Suffer Me.” The group’s 2019 sophomore album “A Distant Call” was a hooks/riffs android, as heard on songs like “Blood from a Stone,” “Hardly to Blame” and “Cold Sword.” That LPs also explored dream-pop balladry, with “Silver Line.
Sheer Mag has earned a rep for being a hot live band. Recently they hit the road with proggy hard-rockers Coheed and Cambria and in the past, they’ve toured with thrash combo Power Trip. Although not quite to Spinal Tap levels, Sheer Mag’s had drummers come and go over the years. Giacomo Zatti is their current touring drummer.
The now-classic “Fan the Flames” - a mix of power-chords, dance beats and Halladay’s yearning bay – was recorded on an analog tape machine with just one track left for vocals. “I’d just broken my thumb and been in surgery,” Halladay recalls, “so I was numb on painkillers while I was trying to do vocals for that song. I was like a zombie.”
