In Miami, Andrew has become something of a homegrown phenomenon–skaters know it and wear it, and style-conscious South Floridians seek it out.

“We’re named after Hurricane Andrew, from 1992. That was the last one that really fucked us up here,” says Rodriguez. “Obviously, there was damage and there were problems. But I remember there being a strong communal element, too. People met their neighbors for the first time, in lots of cases. It sort of had an unexpected positive energy. People stuck together, like, ‘I have extra water,’ or ‘I need some charcoal.’ The name is testament to that resilience, but also starting something anew.
“It comes from Rascal House, which was a famous, Jewish-American deli on Miami Beach that was around forever,” says Katz. “We have so many customers that come in, recognize it and say, ‘Oh, that was such a meaningful part of my childhood.’” What’s more, Andrew has a number of skateboarders that ride for it. “We’ve become an incubator for talent,” says Douzmanian. “And have been incredibly successful in this respect, so far.” With these athletes, too, there’s a core tenet of keeping inclusiveness front and center. “I want it to be known that it’s really the guys, our skaters, who have made this what it is,” says Rodriguez. “They’re very involved, right down to the product itself.
