The White House has released a list of 17 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipients headlined by civil rights leaders, politicians, and cultural icons, such as Apple founder Steve Jobs and soccer star mPinoe.
President Joe Biden released the list on Friday. The Presidential Medal of Freedom is considered the nation's highest civilian honor, given to individuals with noteworthy public accomplishments that range from government service and political activism to business, sports, and entertainment."These seventeen Americans demonstrate the power of possibilities and embody the soul of the nation — hard work, perseverance, and faith," reads the news release announcing the recipients.
Simone Biles is the most decorated American gymnast in history, with a combined total of 32 Olympic and World Championship medals. Biles is also a prominent advocate for athletes' mental health and safety, children in the foster care system, and victims of sexual assault.Sister Simone Campbell is a member of the Sisters of Social Service and former Executive Director of NETWORK, a Catholic social justice organization.
