And because of its use in practice, people might respond to it in ways that make it less accurate.If I’m held accountable for how my students do, and my salary is dependent on it, or other resources that I get are dependent on it, I might be overly focussed on increasing those test scores. But none of that happens with thetest. It’s not used to evaluate anyone.

To go back to the racial gaps, you seemed to be saying that Black and Hispanic students on average suffered more than white students from the pandemic, but, at the same time, it’s the lowest-performing students in every racial group who showed a much bigger drop than the group itself did. It’s new on many dimensions, not just in education. What’s most concerning, but which also gives us an opportunity to actually do something, is that many of the differences that we see are just highlighting and increasing gaps that were already in our system prior to the pandemic. While we’ve never seen a drop this big, we have seen differences in test scores that are this large.

A lot of districts right now are trying to individualize learning in that way. If we can do that, not only in response to the pandemic but in response to students’ needs more broadly, we can emerge with a better school system than we had before. It’s just going to take a lot of work.
