House Speaker Kevin McCarthy predicts that former President Donald Trump will win the Republican Party's nomination for the 2024 presidential election, setting up a potential rematch between Trump and President Joe Biden.
McCarthy's prediction comes as Trump is far ahead in the primary polls, beating out all of his competitors in the primary race, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, considered to be the biggest threat to Trump winning the nomination. In explaining his prediction, McCarthy cited Trump's past achievements when serving in the White House."I think he will be the nominee," McCarthy said in a Sunday interview on Sunday Morning Futures.
DeSantis announced his run for president in May and has failed to gain the momentum in the primary race many predicted he would. Trump's vast lead over DeSantis comes despite the former president facing multiple indictments in court for storing confidential documents at his Mar-a-Lago residence and the Jan. 6 Capitol protest, among other things.
"I served with Ron DeSantis, he’s not at the same level as President Trump by any shape or form. He would not have gotten elected without President Trump’s endorsement," McCarthy said, echoing previous statements Trump has made about Florida's 2018 gubernatorial election. Trump and DeSantis were both in Washington D.C. to attend a summit from the Family Research Council, where Trump touted plans to launch a special task force to investigate people who have been persecuted by the Biden administration. DeSantis, meanwhile, discussed how he did not close churches during the COVID-19 pandemic in Florida.A new straw poll showed Trump far ahead of DeSantis with 63.9% and DeSantis with 27.3%, beating the Florida governor by 35%.
Biden announced earlier this year that he would run for reelection with Vice President Kamala Harris, though new polling could pose trouble for Biden. In a head-to-head matchup, Trump narrowly beat out Biden, with Trump winning 44% of the vote, against Biden's 40%, according to a Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll released Saturday.
