South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg told ABC News Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos that his comments about Afghanistan during Thursday night's ABC News Democratic debate are being misconstrued.

NEW: Pete Buttigieg tells @GStephanopoulos his comments about the Afghanistan war during the ABC News Democratic debate are being misconstrued:"I did not say the U.S. started war. What I'm saying is the lesson is that wars are difficult to end" https://t.co/FlqiC1AGIo pic.twitter.com/t0VaGKKb8s Buttigieg said that if he were commander-in-chief, his focus would be to make sure"this doesn't escalate into further instability, conflict and not only danger to world oil supply, but danger to peace."

"This is why presidential debates are becoming unwatchable," Buttigieg said Thursday night."This reminds everybody of what they cannot stand about Washington. Scoring points against each other. Poking at each other." One of the main messages for the 37-year-old's campaign is a need for generational change in Washington and he says being from a new generation gives him a different perspective on key issues.
