Progreso Mayor Gerardo Alanis is charged with conspiracy to distribute cocaine. His brother, the school board president, is under indictment on similar charges.
The mayor of the Texas border town of Progreso has been arrested on federal drug trafficking charges, ValleyCentral.com reported. Gerardo “Jerry” Alanis, 31, of Progreso was charged with conspiracy to possess more than 5 kilograms of cocaine with intent to distribute, among other offenses. The conspiracy charge alone is punishable by a minimum of 10 years in federal prison. Agents of U.S. Homeland Security Investigations arrested Alanis on Monday morning, ValleyCentral.com reported.
The three were charged in a federal grand jury indictment. Salas pleaded guilty. Frank Alanis has pleaded not guilty. Progreso, a Rio Grande Valley town of 6,000 people located 230 miles south of San Antonio, has a long history of public corruption. In 2014, then-Mayor Omar Leonel Vela pleaded guilty in connection with a scheme to shake down businesses for hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes in exchange for contracts with the city and the school district.
