Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb joined other Ohio mayors Monday to call for “common sense” gun reforms at the state and federal level, while acknowledging they have limited power to enact any gun regulations within their cities.
“If Washington can find compromise on this issue, so can we in Columbus – and we must, now more than ever. Ohio’s mayors need real change at the state and federal level to give us the tools we need to combat gun violence,” Bibb said.
Pureval, meanwhile, zeroed in on Ohio mayors’ inability to enact gun-related restrictions at the city level. Cleveland and other cities have tried to enact gun reforms over the years, but the Supreme Court has ruled that approach as unconstitutional.
For example, Columbus in February enacted a measure that labels gun violence as a public health nuisance.
