Scherzer got the start for Game 1 of the Mets’ wild-card series against the Padres. He was pulled after just 4 2/3 innings, however, allowing seven earned runs in a disastrous outing.The Padres celebrate in the first inning.He surrendered four home runs, to Josh Bell, Trevor Grisham, Jurickson Profar and Manny Machado.
Bell tagged Scherzer for a two-run blast in the first inning, before Grisham’s solo shot extended the deficit to 3-0 in the second. Profar’s three-run blast in the fifth inning made it 6-0, and Machado soon made it 7-0 not long after that.
