Massive fire engulfs Paris's iconic NotreDame Cathedral, prompting fears of collapse
The iconic Notre Dame cathedral in Paris was engulfed in a massive blaze early Monday evening in France.2.05pm ET: A reporter with France 24 has said that the cathedral's"roof has entirely collapsed, there are flames coming out the back of the cathedral as if it was a torch."
2.00pm ET: President Donald Trump tweeted his concern about the blaze, suggesting that French authorities use"flying water tankers." Photos and videos of the massive, and apparently growing, blaze began circulating on social media with witnesses sharing their shocked and horrified reactions. Smoke could be seen billowing above the historic house of worship, which was immortalized by Victor Hugo in his novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame, first published in 1833, which was later adapted as an animated film by Disney in 1996.
The Notre Dame cathedral is about 850 years old and last year, the Catholic Church in France launched an appeal for funds to renovate the aging structure. Officials suggested that the blaze could be linked to renovation work underway on the structure.
