“Someone obviously kept this on a nice bookshelf because it was in such good shape and probably got passed down in the family.”
The book, James Clerk Maxwell’s “An Elementary Treatise on Electricity,” had somehow made its way to a donation pile in West Virginia.The curator of rare books at West Virginia University Libraries, plucked the centuries-old science book from the charity bin and noticed it had last been stamped “Withdrawn” in February 1904.
The copy was acquainted by the New Bedford Library in 1882 and presumably changed hands dozens, if not hundreds, of times before it was checked out for more than a century in 1902.
