Krista Magnifico spent weeks with Ukrainian animal rescue shelter, Breaking the Chains, treating animals found injured and abandoned amid the war.

They are safe, spoiled, adored and they will never struggle with a need or a want," she said.
"I struggle to share how hard it was to see the lives of the Ukrainian people. How every aspect of life is impacted. There are no words to describe the fear and struggle they endure. It is a life of Russian fighter jets passing overhead. That sound of them flying so low. The land mine signs along the road."Krista Magnifico
Magnifico said in Ukraine, most animals"ran free," as"collateral accidental damage." She said most were"filthy, approaching every human they see for a handout."While working with Breaking the Chains, Magnifico and a group of rescuers were able toMagnifico said she now plans to travel there to further assist in finding the animals a home.
"I want to finish their journey and maybe help fill the hole of guilt and abandonment for leaving [the animals] might fill," she said."It is an odd thing; traveling so far away to land in a war torn country and see so much need only to return having felt like you bore witness instead of made things better. I am not sure I believe I did enough."
