The group allegedly submitted fraudulent applications to the state of New Jersey for unemployment insurance benefits using false identities.

A man from Maryland has admitted his involvement in fraudulently obtaining about $2 million in COVID relief funds and New Jersey unemployment benefits, U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger said.

Mohamed Kamara, 42, of Greenbelt, Md., pleaded guilty to wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud via a video conference before U.S. District Judge Esther Salas, prosecutors said. Kamara and others submitted fraudulent applications to the Small Business Administration for Economic Injury Disaster Loans between March and October 2020, officials said. The loans were collectively approved for more than $750,000, authorities said.

The group also submitted fraudulent applications to the state of New Jersey for unemployment insurance benefits using false names, dates of birth and social security numbers, according to the indictment. The New Jersey Department of Labor dispersed more than $1 million in benefits, which were applied for between January and September 2020, court documents said. The indictment did not identify the other parties involved in the alleged scheme.
