Many people only just learned about the 159 line from a tweet from Martin Lewis.
The founder of Money Saving Expert took to X, formerly known as Twiter, to remind people about a handy three digit number to call if you need to reach your bank.
He wrote: "Phone number to remember: 159 If you need call your bank urgently and can't remember its number, just call 159 and it'll put you through. PS if you have had poss scam call, use a different line to call back in case they're spoofing a dial tone." The 159 number works in the same way as calling 999 for the police or 111 for the NHS. If you call 159, an automated message will take you through an option menu where the name of every bank signed up to the service is read aloud. The message attracted over 2,500 likes with many taking to the replies to reveal they hadn't been aware.
Another replied: "Why isn't this number front and center in every banking app, every bank web site and on all their stationery?"The money expert also issued another piece of advice on Thursday, urging people to stock up on stamps before the price hike on October 2.
