Martian Manhunter is a mental heavyweight, but The Human Target proves that a man without any powers can defeat DC's strongest heroes.
While the famous Martian Manhunter may possess the greatest psychic mind in DC's Universe, and it's typically Batman credited as the world's best"prep-time" expert, The Human Target aka Christopher Chance has proven a regular man can beat the Justice League's best... with the proper preparations.
In Tom King and Greg Smallwood's Black Label series The Human Target, Chance has shown himself to be just as skilled as the Dark Knight while lacking access to the limitless resources that Batman typically enjoys. While Batman has gadgets, vehicles, and weapons for every situation, Chance only has his disguises and knowledge of his targets to work with. Chance assumes the identities of those who are in danger to prevent them from being harmed.
Despite being considered one of the most powerful telepaths in the DCU, Martian Manhunter is caught off guard by Chance. He does not expect a regular man to be prepared for such an attack, much less to be attacked himself. The career of being a human target is inherently passive, as it requires waiting for someone else to attack. Chance is now reversing his role, using his skills aggressively to hunt a target of his own. The preparation that would normally go into replicating the life of a client is now being directed towards uncovering the identity of his killer.
Although he may not have any superpowers, Chance's dedication to understanding how other people think makes him just as formidable as any of the costumed characters that he interacts with. If he cannot fight someone physically, he will find a way to get at them psychologically. The Human Target shows that, just like Batman, with enough preparation Chance can figure out ways around any DC Comics hero that stands in his way.
