Despite increases in marijuana use, alcohol remains the most-used substance among adults, according to the the Monitoring the Future panel study.
Research by Monitoring the Future, which is funded by the National Institutes for Health, shows 43% of adults ages 21 to 30 years old used marijuana in 2021, a significant increase from 34% in 2016 and 29% in 2011. Daily marijuana use also increased in 2021, with 11% of young adults reporting daily use . About 8% used marijuana daily in 2016 and 6% in 2011.
Despite those increases, alcohol remains the substance of choice among young adults, the study shows. Alcohol use overall has been on the decline: In 2021, 66% of young adults reported alcohol use in the past 30 days. In 2016, it was at 70% and in 2011, 69%, the study shows.Nicotine vaping is showing sharp increases among young adults, the study shows, reaching 16% in 2021 compared to just 6% in 2017. Marijuana vaping is used by 12% of young adults, up from 6% in 2017.
Cigarette use is down significantly, as well as non-medical use of opioids, according to the study. But 8% of young adults reported past-year hallucinogen use, an increase from 5% in 2016 and 3% in 2011. Hallucinogens included LSD, MDMA, mescaline, peyote, “shrooms” or psilocybin, and PCP. “As the drug landscape shifts over time, this data provides a window into the substances and patterns of use favored by young adults,” National Institute on Drug Abuse Director Dr. Nora Volkow said in a statement. “We need to know more about how young adults are using drugs like marijuana and hallucinogens, and the health effects that result from consuming different potencies and forms of these substances.
