Pregnant women in the U.S. use marijuana at twice the rate they did some 15 years earlier, according to new nationwide estimates.

Pregnant women in the U.S. use marijuana at twice the rate they did some 15 years earlier, new nationwide estimates from the National Institutes of Health and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration suggest — and most often use the drug during their first trimester.

“Although many states have approved cannabis for nausea/vomiting , the results suggest that clinicians might not recommend it during pregnancy,” the study authors wrote in a research letter published in JAMA. Cannabis use during pregnancy is also associated with a heightened risk of premature birth, according to a study of Canadian women published in JAMA this week. As with most studies, these results suggest correlation rather than causation.
