But the City Council at the time used eminent domain to take their property and others for racially motivated reasons, under the guise of needing more park land, the historical record shows. That set off a local political movement that, among other initiatives, saw the City Council agree to create a new plaque at Bruce’s Beach Park — one that boasts a more comprehensive inscription — as well as Los Angeles County work with the state to return the former lodge property to the Bruce family’s descendants.
Conspiring to exclude Black Americans from the beach, and using police to enforce that exclusion through unlawful and unconstitutional arrests and prosecutions.
