Town hall bosses says the area is the 'missing piece of the jigsaw' in the regeneration of central Manchester
The team tasked with transforming the Strangeways area on the edge of Manchester city centre has been selected. Consultants have been appointed by two councils to draw up a masterplan for the much-maligned neighbourhood for the next decade and beyond.
Town hall bosses have set out a blueprint for the 'key gateway to the city' where new homes, green spaces and business units are planned. Now, a specialist team has been chosen to draw up a strategic regeneration framework which will set out the finer details. Nicola Rigby, Principal Avison Young said: "We are delighted to be appointed by the councils on this incredibly important piece of work. The Strangeways and Cambridge area is one of the last pieces of the city fringe to be considered on a comprehensive basis, and a great example of the two cities combining to deliver meaningful change.
However, the masterplan will work on the assumption that the prison will stay in situ. The Cambridge area is defined as Great Clowes Street from Broughton Bridge to Broughton Lane and back down to the River Irwell via Rugby Street and Overbridge Road.
