Graeme Bowker had been using heroin since 1986 and was found dead at his home in Rawtenstall
A lifelong heroin addict was found dead at home after friends hadn't heard from him for several days.
Graeme Bowker had been using heroin since 1986 when he was just 19. He died at the age of 55 alone at his home in Rawtenstall where he was found by a friend on the morning of December 12 last year. At an inquest held today at Accrington Town Hall Assistant Coroner Richard Taylor described how paramedics and police had been called by Graeme's friend David. He had gone to Graeme's house in Wheatholme Street having not heard from him for several days and found him unresponsive. The coroner said: "He was a known drug user and was reported by his friend David to have been unwell for a couple of weeks and was breathless.
The inquest heard that although Graeme, who has no known next of kin, did have methadone and heroin in his system at the time of his death they were not at levels associated with fatalities particularly in users as tolerant of the drugs as he was. However, a CT scan revealed he had bronchopneumonia, and as heroin and methadone depress the respiratory system the immediate cause of death was given as heroin toxicity with the chest infection as a contributory factor.
Concluding that Graeme's death was drug-related the coroner said: "The evidence suggests that the heroin was used shortly before death and I have to take into account the effects of methadone and heroin on respiratory function. He already had a significant chest infection and he takes the drugs and passes away."
