Man on Texas death row for murder of SMU student dies of cardiac arrest
of a Southern Methodist University student died Saturday of natural causes, prison officials said.Donald Andrew BessBess, 74, was admitted to a Texas Department of Criminal Justice medical facility Sept. 1, communications director Amanda Hernandez said. He did not have a scheduled execution date.A Dallas County jury sentenced Bess to death in 2010 for killing 20-year-old Angela Samota in 1984.
The case went cold until 2008 when preserved DNA evidence from Samota’s condominium matched Bess through a national database. Bess was alreadyBess was serving a life sentence for raping one of the women in 1985 — eight months after Samota was killed — in Harris County when Dallas police matched his DNA to Samota.Before Samota’s murder, Bess kidnapped a woman off a Houston street and raped her in 1977. He was out of prison on parole when he killed Samota.
