By Allyson Chiu Allyson Chiu Reporter with the Morning Mix team Email Bio Follow April 17 at 11:50 PM A 37-year-old man from New Jersey was detained after he tried to enter St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York on Wednesday night carrying two containers of gasoline, lighter fluid and butane lighters, police said.
“It’s hard to say exactly what his intentions were, but I think the totality of the circumstances of an individual walking into an iconic location like St. Patrick’s Cathedral carrying over four gallons of gasoline, two bottles of lighter fluid and lighters is something we would have great concern over,” Miller told reporters.
Though Miller said “some gasoline apparently spilled onto the floor” as the man was exiting, in a statement to CBS, the Archdiocese of New York confirmed that “nothing happened” in the cathedral. Police said there were other people inside at the time.“His answers were inconsistent and evasive, although he remained conversational with them and cooperative,” he said.
