After officers attempted “de-escalate” the situation, Dotson charged the officers with the knife, police said.
Police spokeswoman Carla Marion Reeves said officers fired one less-lethal round as a de-escalation tactic. Citing the active investigation into the shooting, she declined to comment on whether firing a less-lethal weapon is standard protocol in a response to a self-harming individual.Two officers fired their weapons at Dotson, Reeves said, but she declined to specify the number of times Dotson was shot, citing the investigation.
Officers provided medical aid until EMS services arrived, police said. Dotson was transported to the hospital where he died, according to authorities.
