A man who went swimming in a North Carolina lake has died after contracting the 'brain-eating amoeba' Naegleria, public health officials said Tuesday.
A North Carolina man has died after contracting an illness caused by a"brain-eating amoeba," public health officials said.
"Our sympathies are with the family and loved ones," said state epidemiologist Zack Moore."People should be aware that this organism is present in warm freshwater lakes, rivers and hot springs across North Carolina, so be mindful as you swim or enjoy water sports." The risk of infection from Naegleria fowleri is very low, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Only four people out of 145 known infected individuals in the United States from 1962 to 2018 have survived.
