Man charged with capital murder over shooting death of 82-year-old man

Tyler Cameron Butler, 20, of Houston, is accused of shooting Henry Roberts during a robbery at the Lansbourough Apartments, 10012 Cullen.Police were called to the apartment complex at about 7 a.m. on Oct. 8. When they arrived, they found Roberts dead from a gunshot to his head. Butler was arrested on Dec. 1 on unauthorized use of a vehicle charges, according to jail records. On Dec. 2, he was also charged with evading arrest or detention. The murder charge was filed on Dec. 3, according to police. Police said they interviewed Butler after he was arrested and then filed the murder charges, but didn't say how investigators connected Butler to the shooting.
Butler in 2021 pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and engaging in organized criminal activity, according to court records. In the latter charge, he and two other people were accused of working together to burglarize a home. He was sentenced to spend three years in state prison, and was given credit for 511 days of time served. He was released from prison on Sept. 11, 2022, according to public records.If convicted, Butler could be sentenced to the death penalty.
Butler is scheduled to next appear in court on Tuesday on the evading arrest charge, according to court records.
