Man accused of raping elderly woman with dementia tells trial jury she made advances towards him
A man accused of raping an elderly woman with dementia in a care home has told a jury that she made advances towards him.
He told the court that his care work responsibilities included assisting residents with showering them and feeding them. Mr Ekhator told jurors he had not looked at her personal care plan. On the evening of December 16, Mr Ekhator said that he first checked on the victim at around 10 o'clock. He claimed her door was locked from the inside. Jurors heard that he then went to the kitchen to get a 'small knife' which he used to unlock the door.
“The first thing she said to me was 'why did you do it'. I wanted her to be calm and take her out of her mood,” he told the court. “She kept repeating it, 'why did you do it, why did you do it'. I was confused. I told her to try and get some sleep. "I didn't say anything to anyone else. People had told me she was confused, so I just thought she was confused."
